About Us Over the past 50 years, the "little red bicycle" has been a symbol of nursery school excellence within our community. The Bethany Nursery Group opened its doors for the first time in September 1959 with 12 students. It was formed by a group of dedicated women including Sarah Eighmy, Martha Briggs, Fran Tefts and Sue Welch to fill a void in the community. What began as a play group, has grown and evolved into a preschool program which is dedicated to providing a quality early childhood education for children in Bethany and the surrounding area towns. Bethany Nursery Group currently nurtures and educates about 50 students a year.
With a curriculum based on the State of Connecticut's Preschool Curriculum Framework, the program at BNG offers a balance of structured activities and free play activities all designed to enhance each individual child's emotional, social, intellectual and physical development. Areas of Math, Science and Language are all taught by utilizing different avenues that keep our young students interested and encouraged. Directed free play offers opportunities to foster creativity, imagination and self-assurance as well as the chance to build skills such as negotiation, cooperation and communication.
Our large, completely fenced playground is utilized year round as an extension of our classroom. From sledding and building snowmen in the snow, to stories and picnics under the trees in spring, our staff encourages the children to explore, investigate and enjoy nature. Whether it is planting flowers and bulbs or examining insects with magnifying glasses and researching them in books, children take part in hands-on learning constantly.
BNG provides many enrichment programs and activities. There are in-school programs such as the Mystic Aquarium, Critter Caravan and Mother Goose as well field trips to diverse venues such as the Downtown Cabaret Theatre, Ansonia Nature Center, Regional Water Authority, farms and orchards. We welcome and encourage parents to be involved with our school, whether it is speaking to the children about an occupation, attending special events and field trips, joining our board of directors or simply being one of our "Mystery Readers".
Each year, BNG participates in the Bethany Memorial Day Parade. The teachers, children, board members and parents come together each spring to create a new float annually. The children ride on the float and their faces truly reflect the happiness of the school's environment.
Bethany Nursery Group is also committed to providing support for our parents by bringing in guest speakers. Some topics addressed in the past include: Parenting Styles, Reading, Teaching Children How to Deal with Stress and Transitions, Fine Motor Development, and Stranger Safety- Keeping Your Children Safe.
Just as in 1959, Bethany Nursery Group, Inc. remains committed to providing a quality preschool education at an affordable cost. Call us to make an appointment to see what we are all about!
